What you're looking at
There are 16,000 people in this simulation. Each one runs the same small rule, over and over: open to it → interested → loud about it → sick of it → open again. Nobody plans anything. Nobody can see more than their handful of neighbours.
In the agent view, a person's position on screen is their state of mind. You can pick anyone and follow their whole life. You will learn the psychology exactly — and you will never find an idea, because an idea isn't in there.
In the field view, nothing about the simulation changes. Not one number. We only swap which variables get drawn as space: now a person's position is where they sit in the social fabric — who they talk to — and their state of mind is just their colour.
A spiral appears. It travels. It survives being made out of different people. It was there the whole time; you were looking at it along the wrong axis.
Why it matters
This is the cheapest possible demonstration of a claim that's otherwise hard to believe: “minds” and “ideas” can be two projections of one system. The mind projection keeps individuals and throws away the population pattern. The field projection keeps the pattern and throws away the individuals. Both are lossy. Neither is the “real” one. Emergence, at least in cases like this one, is what it feels like to find the coordinates where a distributed thing becomes a simple thing.
It's the same move a sparse autoencoder makes on a neural network: the structure was always in the activations, smeared across the neuron basis, and a change of basis makes it legible.
